During a recent refurbishment of the Allt na Lairige hydro-electric power station near Inverary in Scotland, the hydraulic control system was upgraded from the original low pressure system to a modern high pressure one. In-house designed multi-orifice restrictors were being used in the hydraulic actuators which operate the main water inlet valves, called spears, which are controlled by the governor to ensure that suitable control of the water jets to the turbines is ensured for all load conditions of the generator.

Cardiff University uses Igus bearings for a smoother season

The challenge? To design, develop, build and market a single seater racing car for the IMechE’s annual Formula Student competition. Made up of students from the School of Engineering, Cardiff Racing is currently the number one team in Wales and third in the UK. This year’s car, the CR12, is the twelfth car to be entered by the University in as many years. Paying particular attention to the car’s aerodynamic performance, the undergraduates have implemented many new features.
