Trial proves reliability of river-monitoring solution

After 15 weeks of operation, Endress+Hauser has successfully completed Phase 1 of a river trial, with its solution achieving 99.8% data availability. This result places the company among the top providers for reliable data transmission, one of the key priorities for both regulators and water companies.

Trial proves reliability of river-monitoring solution

The solution is currently being evaluated as part of a trial in a real river environment at one of the UK's water companies. The trial aims to provide evidence-based data on different monitoring solutions to help the water company make informed decisions for future river-monitoring deployments. Data availability is becoming increasingly important with the recent announcement of new Environment Agency guidelines that could see water companies fined up to 500,000 for breaching rules on polluting waterways.

Unlike pumped sampling systems, Endress+Hauser's solution uses a direct immersion floating sensor assembly, allowing sensors to measure directly in the river. This eliminates the risk of pump blockage caused by debris or sediment, avoids the overheating risks associated with pump-based systems and enclosed cabinets in the summer months, and removes the possibility of reactions occurring in the sampling line, potentially affecting the measurement.

"It's encouraging that the trial is challenging the assumption that pumped kiosks are always the best solution," says Endress+Hauser UK's Water and Wastewater Industry Manager Ipek Temizel. "Our in-river system consistently reflected real events, following expected trends across multiple parameters rather than producing isolated sensor spikes, and demonstrating both reliability and measurement confidence."

The trial is now entering Phase 2 of testing, with results expected by the autumn.
