ifm has expanded its family of safety encoders for mobile machines, giving manufacturers a reliable way to capture position, angle, and speed values wherever vehicles or superstructures move automatically. The RM900S series suits applications ranging from municipal vehicles and AGVs in intralogistics to heavy-duty AMRs used in mines and harbours, where safe operation must be always guaranteed.
The safety encoder precisely records the movement of components such as axles, crane arms, and tipping skips. From this data, machine builders can reliably derive steering, turning, and tilting angles as well as the current lifting height. The "preset on the fly" function adds continuous position synchronisation during motion, for example via RFID, so accuracy is maintained without interrupting operation.
Safe operation depends on sensor redundancy, which is already built into each encoder. This redundancy and the continuous self-monitoring of safe operation have been tested and certified by TUV Rheinland. A new multicolour LED on the rear of the housing displays the safe operating status at a glance, and integration into the SISTEMA library significantly reduces the effort needed to implement and certify safety-related automation.
Installation is straightforward, even across larger systems. Each encoder includes both a CAN input and a CAN output, allowing several encoders or other compatible sensors to be connected in series via daisy chaining. Paired with an ifm controller, the encoder reduces programming effort in Codesys, because the secure connection and communication between the two products are guaranteed by default.
The expanded product family covers both axial and radial connection variants with solid or hollow shafts. New additions include a version with a direct hollow shaft flange without stator coupling and a version with a servo flange for mounting external couplings or cable pulls. The encoders operate from 8 to 36 V DC, offer 29-bit resolution, support CANopen and CANopen Safety protocols, carry an IP69K protection rating, and meet SIL2 and PLd safety levels.
By combining integrated safety, certified self-monitoring, and simple series installation, the ifm safety encoder helps manufacturers of mobile machines bring every moving element safely into position whilst keeping engineering and acceptance effort low.
