RS Components brings intuitive 3D design into the world of academia

RS Components has announced that it is to run a series of one-day workshops on its popular 3D design tool DesignSpark Mechanical at universities across Europe. The free workshops are designed for university-based academics and educators of electronics, industrial engineering or mechatronics, enabling them to return to their respective institutions with this newly gained knowledge of 3D design to share with their students. In the UK, the workshops will be held on the 4th and 5th of June at the University of Hertfordshire.

RS Components brings intuitive 3D design into the world of academia

>The increasing availability of 3D printing and rising pressure for quick prototyping means that engineers cannot afford to wait for CAD departments to create physical concepts. To meet this demand, RS Components created DesignSpark Mechanical, which is a free, powerful design tool that combines SpaceClaim's industry-leading direct modelling technology with a digital parts library containing millions of products including RS Components and Allied Electronics 3D catalogues. The ideal software for introducing electronic design students to the world of 3D design, DesignSpark Mechanical is an intuitive and gesture-based modelling system that makes 3D design accessible to engineers of all disciplines without the need for CAD expertise.

>The workshops will provide an introduction to the basics of DesignSpark Mechanical, with instruction on how to use the Select, Pull, Move, Fill and Combine tools, as well as the user interface and other essential tools within the software. The second part of the workshop will be a practical exercise that enables attendees to create an enclosure design for a Raspberry Pi board, finally producing an STL file for use with a 3D printer to build their prototype design.

>The workshops are exclusively reserved for post-graduate members of academia. The locations and dates of the DesignSpark Mechanical workshops are:

>

  • UK: 4th/5th June, University of Hertfordshire
  • Italy: 12th/13th June, Politecnico di Milano
  • France: 2nd/3rd July, ESIEE Paris
