Motion control takes centre stage at MedTech Ireland

For medical device designers, sterilisation can be just as important a consideration as size or performance when specifying a motor. EMS will use the event to showcase drive systems designed to meet these requirements, alongside gearing and control technologies that can be combined to create complete motion solutions.

A key focus will be FAULHABER's BHx series of autoclavable brushless motors. Based on two-pole brushless technology, the series combines high power with compact dimensions, while low vibration and noise support the need for smooth, reliable motion. The range also offers dynamic performance and accurate positioning, making them suited to the demanding motion requirements of medical devices.

"Sterilisation changes the equation when it comes to specifying a motor for medical equipment," said Dave Walsha, sales and marketing director at EMS. "It's not simply about finding a motor that delivers the required performance. Engineers also need to consider how repeated exposure to demanding sterilisation processes will affect the complete drive system over time. That puts the motor and gearbox specification under much greater scrutiny.

"At this year's MedTech, we want to demonstrate what's possible when the motor, gearbox and control system are considered together. This gives engineers more scope to build the drive system around the application, rather than treating the motor as an isolated component."

Alongside the BHx motors, EMS will display a selection of FAULHABER advanced motion controllers. These single-axis positioning controllers are designed to control DC, brushless and linear motors, with versions available for supply voltages from six to 50 V DC and continuous output currents of up to 10 A. The new Generation V3.0 series drivers offer increased power, faster control and additional operating modes for more demanding applications.
