Magnomatics wins innovation award
Sheffield based magnetic gear manufacturer Magnomatics has won the 2016 Made in Sheffield innovation award at the annual event held to celebrate excellence in manufacturing from across the region. The award recognised two products, Pseudo Direct Drive PDD and MAGSPLIT, both manufactured at Magnomatics’ site in Sheffield.
The PDD is a high-torque motor/generator offering high efficiency operation in rail traction, marine propulsion and wind power applications. MAGSPLIT is a power-split transmission system for hybrid vehicles that achieves 5 to 17% better fuel economy than current state-of-the-art hybrids, whilst reducing cost and complexity.
The award also recognised company’s passion for inspiring future generations of engineers, providing interview coaching, mentoring and industrial placements to the regions young engineers. As an example, Magnomatics’ connection with Sheffield based Workwise, has helped over 40 young people through coaching and work experience placements.
David Latimer, Chief Executive Officer of Magnomatics commented, “Winning the Made in Sheffield innovation award is a great way to celebrate the company’s 10th anniversary.
“Since forming as a University of Sheffield spin out in 2006, Magnomatics has secured £4.5m of venture funding and received £2.3m of support from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency. This has allowed the company to manufacture products for global industries, alongside R&D projects with blue chip companies including Ford, Volvo Truck, Fiat, VW, Triumph Aerospace and Rolls Royce.
“Even with international growth, the company continues to support the steel city by working with local high quality manufacturing companies as well as offering work experience placements to students from the University Technical College Sheffield alongside assisting undergraduate and PhD students from University of Sheffield.”
