Magnomatics, a leading manufacturer of magnetic gears is pleased to announce that it is to work with Rolls-Royce and ATB Laurence Scott to develop its highly efficient and compact Pseudo Direct Drive (PDD®) for marine applications.
In a collaborative development project worth more than £1.7 million and co-funded by the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, the team will design, manufacture and test a 2.5MW Magnetically Geared Propulsion Motor (MGPM) powered by Magnomatics PDD.
It is anticipated that the MGPM will offer significant benefits for marine propulsion by significantly increasing the electrical efficiency compared to existing state of the art electrical machines. Moreover, with a magnetic gear the MGPM will deliver a very compact, low maintenance and robust propulsion system.
The aggregated efficiency benefits and low operational maintenance advantages would allow more flexible propulsion systems to be used on many types of vessels leading to an improvement in average fleet efficiency and therefore reducing emissions.
David Latimer, CEO of Magnomatics commented, “We are delighted to have secured Innovate UK support for this project. Marine propulsion is a great application for the Magnomatics PDD and Rolls-Royce and ATB Laurence Scott are great partners to bring this technology to market.”
