Kluber Lubrication has opened a new testing facility of approximately 1,000 square metres at its Munich site. The new facility expands the company's capabilities to examine lubricant performance under conditions resembling those of industrial applications and develop solutions for specific customer requirements.
"Tribology is the scientific discipline concerned with friction, wear and lubrication between surfaces in relative motion. For Kluber Lubrication, it forms the basis for developing and optimising specialty lubricants. Tribometers reproduce loads from real-world applications under controlled conditions and make it possible to measure the interaction between lubricant, surface and component," says Reiner Spallek, Head of Global Tribology at Kluber Lubrication.
The tests are based on specific customer applications. Loads, temperature, speed and environmental factors are translated into controlled, reproducible test conditions. Because standard methods cannot cover every application-specific question, Kluber Lubrication also develops its own test rigs and methods.
"A tribometer provides basic measurement data. It's then on us to make conclusions. This requires experience and an accurate understanding of the specific application. That is how we can tailor lubricants to specific customer requirements," Reiner Spallek adds.
The new testing facility has space for more than 50 test rigs. "New technologies and applications also bring new requirements. The additional capacity enables us to continue developing innovative test methods for specific customer applications. This puts us in a strong position to meet testing needs through 2040 and beyond," Reiner Spallek explains. The facility's design also optimises aspects such as noise protection, air quality, indoor climate, lighting, logistics and material flows.
The new area is also included in tours for customers at the Munich site, which welcomes up to 800 visitors each year. Visitors can see how Kluber Lubrication simulates practical application requirements under controlled test conditions and uses the results to develop lubricant solutions. The test rigs make visible what the lubricant itself does not reveal.
Kluber Lubrication has operated testing facilities at its Munich site since 1997. They reproduce requirements from a wide range of industries and applications that includes automotive and centralised lubrication systems as well as wind energy and robotics.
