Converter offers advanced solution to DC motor speed control

WEG has launched its new TPD32-EV series of AC/DC converters, which it says marks a significant milestone in meeting the ever-growing technological demands of modern industrial systems. The new series offers precise control and unparalleled versatility for a range of industrial applications.

The TPD32-EV series has been designed to address the evolving needs of modern industrial applications. With an array of potential uses from metal processing to amusement parks, it is a truly versatile solution for DC motor speed control. Its extensive range of supply voltages and current ratings caters to both 2-quadrant and 4-quadrant systems, making it a flexible choice for a wide variety of industrial setups.

Originally developed for DC motor control, the TPD32-EV-FC also shines in applications involving highly inductive loads such as electromagnets, chokes, synchronous motor excitation circuits, and electrolysis. For instance, hydrogen production plants rely on electrolysers to separate hydrogen and oxygen molecules from water, a process facilitated by passing an electric current between two electrodes immersed in water. The TPD32-EV-FC, a thyristor-based converter, ensures precise control of the DC current or DC voltage supply, enhancing efficiency and reliability in hydrogen production.

One of the standout features of the TPD32-EV series is its capability to address harmonic mitigation requirements. Harmonics can lead to inefficient operation, equipment failure and even reduced machinery longevity. By configuring the system in either a 12-pulse parallel or 12-pulse series setup with dual control units (master and slave) and double thyristor bridges, the line harmonic total harmonic distortion (THDi) can be significantly reduced from 35 per cent to an impressive 11 per cent.

“This configuration not only optimises system performance, but also aligns with WEG’s commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency,” explained Karim Boudaoud, product manager at WEG Automation Europe.

The TPD32-EV series boasts precise DC current or DC voltage control for smoother, more efficient operation. It also has adjustable output current and is available at a variety of motor ratings and power settings with a wide range of DC output voltages and currents, making it versatile and flexible. The converter has been designed with simplicity at the forefront, with minimal user system requirements and dedicated application packages available to support on even complex industrial operations.

The TPD32-EV converted can also be completely controlled and programmed via PC using the WEG_eXpress Configurator and monitored using WEG_Softscope. These intuitive tools are powerful user-friendly platforms for monitoring and control of equipment, and this allows enhanced operation and performance optimisation even remotely.

“WEG remains dedicated to delivering advanced solutions that empower industries to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of technology and automation,” continued Boudaoud. “The TPD32-EV series of industrial AC/DC converters offer a versatile solution for motor control to meet the technological demands of a vast range of sectors, for improved efficiency and exceptional performance.”
