Caterpillar track task for roller chain
Renold's Hydro-Service chain has found an unusual application in the US where it has been chosen, by National Power Rodding, to provide the caterpillar tracks on underground pipe-crawlers used to inspect the integrity of sewers and water waste pipes. The crawlers carry miniature cameras and lights so that the interior of pipes and sewers can be filmed to locate problem areas without the need for excavation.
Renold's Hydro-Service chain has been fitted with attachments to which National Power Rodding's engineers have secured rubber pads that drive the crawlers like the caterpillar tracks on a tank. Hydro-Service was chosen because of its anticorrosion properties. Each component of the chain is mechanically treated prior to assembly ensuring consistent, secure protection from corrosion. So effective is Renold's Hydro-Service chain that the company says it will resist corrosion for 30 times longer than ordinary carbon steel chain. That's good news for the crawlers operating in their watery underworld.
