Round displays open up design possibilities

Relec introduces round TFT and projected capacitive (PCAP) displays from FutureLabs, suitable for outdoor and harsh environments as well as innovative commercial applications. The 9.5in round FLR-0959MLV0PCFA1 from FutureLabs has an active display area of 240mm. Resolution is 1540 x 1540 with 1000 CD/M2 brightness. The round display is suitable for harsh environments and outdoor use, for example in high ambient lighting areas in marine sonar and radar systems. Its wide operating temperature range of -30 to +85°C makes it suitable for use in automotive and industrial display panels.

Global battery manufacturer GS Yuasa, which has a production plant in Ebbw Vale, is creating 105 new jobs and protecting a further 360 positions with support from Welsh Government funding of up to £2.5m. This forms part of a multi-million pound investment by the Japanese based corporation.

Trumpf fires up laser lightning rod in Swiss Alps

Trumpf and the University of Geneva have fired up a laser-based lightning rod at the top of Säntis mountain in Switzerland. Over the next few weeks, the researchers will be using this powerful system to conduct a series of weather experiments. Their aim is to control lightning from storm clouds and direct the strikes to places where they won’t cause any damage.
