Fan efficiency isn

Fan efficiency isn"t intuitive

Few would deny the importance of energy efficiency in ventilation fan systems – after all, by far the largest component of the lifetime cost of any fan system is the cost of the energy it uses, and every business is today mindful of the impact its operations have on the environment. But in the highly competitive field of ventilation fan efficiency, it pays to be cautious; it’s all too easy to be misled by claims that at best could be described as over enthusiastic, and at worst as downright misleading.

Understanding the effects of PWM control on brushless DC motors

Understanding the effects of PWM control on brushless DC motors

Brushless DC motors are increasingly popular options for a host of critical applications where size, performance and reliability are important considerations. But designers of motion systems can face challenges when selecting or developing PWM electronics to drive these motors. Matthieu Bouat, Application Engineer at Portescap, discusses the parameters that designers should consider when developing the electronic control aspect of the motion system, particularly where factors such as battery life and the overall size and weight of the package are key concerns.

Neat, packed and sustainable

Neat, packed and sustainable

Mitsubishi Electric has supported Mailroom Machines in the redesign of a Norpak mail wrapping machine to improve the environmental footprint of its activities. The new, highly versatile setup leverages the innovative FR-A800-R2R inverter with dedicated winding functions, to accommodate the use of sustainable packaging materials while eliminating waste. To optimise operations, the Norpak machine also features other system-matched components from Mitsubishi Electric, such as a GOT2000 series HMI and MELSEC-iQ-F PLC.

Miniaturisation means smaller, higher performing machines

Miniaturisation means smaller, higher performing machines

As OEMs strive to develop ever more mobile and compact machines, the trend is forcing miniature motion control manufacturers to maintain pace. Miniature motors and controllers are enabling precision performance control with an increasing need for reliability in demanding applications. Gerard Bush of INMOCO explains how in meeting the demands, miniature motion technology is moving towards decentralised control.

New Igus module predicts the service life of machines and manufacturing systems

New Igus module predicts the service life of machines and manufacturing systems

Motion plastics leader Igus has developed a new predictive maintenance device, a new home for the software to power its smart plastics products – the i.Cee:local module. The module calculates the remaining service life of the energy chain, cable, linear guide and/or plain bearings during their operation. By doing this, the service life of the system can be optimised, faults are detected and rectified at an early stage, and more accurate maintenance can be planned in advance. The module monitors abrasion, measures tensile/push force and provides information about an impending overload in the energy chain or plastics system, using smart plastics sensors from Igus. It can be integrated over Ethernet or over a local network.
