Automating the plastics industry

Automating the plastics industry

One of the biggest challenges for robotics manufacturers is the perception that the technology is here to take the jobs of humans – but that is simply not the case. Unfortunately, the notion that automation poses a threat to jobs often overshadows the potential benefits of investing in the technology. Here, TM Robotics founder and CEO, Nigel Smith, explains how robot technology is impacting the plastics and injection moulding market.

New ultrasonic sensor options simplify double sheet detection

New ultrasonic sensor options simplify double sheet detection

Double sheet detection where consistent and reliable detection of one or more layers of materials such as; foil, paper, cardboard, labels or even thin metal sheets can present complex challenges. If issues are not resolved they can lead to machine downtime, wasted materials and in some cases expensive repair costs. This can occur across a myriad of applications such as printing, packaging, automotive and finishing industries.

SIL 3 current drivers for hazardous areas

SIL 3 current drivers for hazardous areas

With new SIL 3 current drivers, Pepperl+Fuchs is completing its portfolio of SIL 3 isolated barriers for all types of signals – both as modules for DIN rail mounting and as isolating components for termination boards. Positioners in a SIL 3 application – which have always been available for digital signals from or into the field, and for analogue measuring signals – can now be connected directly to the controller with a single interface module. A SIL 3 application must no longer be realized via the elaborate path of redundant SIL 2 devices.

The safety mechanisms keeping our rail network safe

The safety mechanisms keeping our rail network safe

It’s been nearly 200 years since Britain’s first railroad was constructed to connect Stockton to Darlington for the transportation of minerals. Since then, rail transportation has evolved at a rapid pace and now faster, greener and safer trains travel in larger numbers across the nation every day. How exactly does technology enhance rail safety? Here, Simone Bruckner, managing director at power resistor manufacturer Cressall, explains the safety mechanisms protecting the UK’s tracks.
