Cables and connectors at MachineBuilding.South

An increased focus on automation brings with it a need to deliver control signals and transfer data, so the role of cables and connectors, not to mention associated cable management systems is vital. And you'll find plenty to see and discuss at MachineBuilding.South on 8 July at Sandown Park.

If you have a demanding high-heat environments, then a good place to start is the HELU UK stand (Stand 117). HELUTHERM SINGLE CORE UL STYLE 3512 from HELU UK is built for high-heat environments such as heaters, air systems, and industrial machinery. Silicone insulation supports temperatures up to 200degC, and UL/CSA approvals allow global use.

It works in fixed or flexible setups, offers 600 V under UL/CSA and 1,000 V under VDE, and is halogen free and flame retardant. Available from 0.5 to 240 mm2, it keeps sizing familiar and simplifies international procurement, with multiple sheath colours for easy recognition.

Have a chat, too, with LAPP (Stand 125), which offers a huge range of advanced cabling, connectivity and integrated system solutions that help manufacturers improve productivity, reliability and sustainability across modern industrial operations. These solutions cover the full automation pyramid, from dedicated industrial cabling through to bespoke connectivity systems engineered for demanding industrial environments.

A chat with the experts at LAPP will provide you with practical insight into: industrial communication and seamless data transfer; OT security in connected production environments; digital inventory management; and integration of cable and connector systems within smart factories.

LAPP also offers comprehensive harnessing capabilities, ranging from standard cable assemblies to fully customised cable harnesses for machines and industrial installations. These ready-to-install systems combine cables, connectors and accessories into fully tested solutions that help customers: reduce installation time; improve operational reliability; and simplify procurement and integration processes.

Another company that can offer you both cables and connectors, combined with complete cable management systems, is igus (Stand 104). The company has recently expanded its range of readycable assemblies for moving applications. New to the portfolio are cables with connectors for systems from Keyence, one of the world's leading manufacturers of automation and quality assurance solutions.

Designers can immediately connect the cables to moving high-speed cameras using the plug-and-play principle, without time-consuming and error-prone in-house designs.

With a firm focus on cable management, WISKA (Stand 105) will be presenting a range of robust and precision-engineered solutions designed to support modern machine builders and system integrators.

WISKA's brass nickel-plated EMSKV cable glands are engineered to provide exceptional mechanical strength and corrosion resistance, making them an ideal solution for demanding machine environments.

WISKA's SPRINT range is manufactured from high-quality brass with a durable nickel-plated finish, these glands provide excellent protection against moisture, oils, and industrial chemicals. They offer high ingress protection ratings up to IP68/IP69, ensuring secure sealing even in washdown or high-dust environments.

Designed with machine builders in mind, WISKA's SPRINT EMSKV range provides reliable strain relief, consistent clamping ranges, and long-term cable retention, helping maintain system integrity across complex machinery installations. Their precision manufacturing tolerances ensure dependable installation and repeatable performance, key requirements when building equipment.

Connectors are another consideration. With the new B23 connector, binder (Stand 31) presents a new generation of hybrid connectors for industrial automation. The series combines power supply and shielded data transmission in one compact connector and enables Ethernet transmission rates of up to 100 Mbit/s.

As a result, the B23 creates the foundation for modern One Cable Automation concepts and addresses key market requirements - from reduced cabling effort and increasing data rates to the growing decentralisation of industrial systems.

As control functions are increasingly moved directly into the machine, the requirements placed on connectors in the field are also rising. Instead of centralised control cabinet solutions, decentralised systems are being used more frequently, requiring robust, pluggable connections with a high degree of protection.

The B23 connector meets precisely these requirements: it is suitable for both power supply and data transmission in decentralised automation concepts and supports modular machine architectures - for example in robotics or flexible manufacturing systems.

Look out, too, for the Han-Eco, Han B and Han HPR connectors from HARTING (Stand 14), a connector series featuring Size 4 hoods/housings and inserts. This new size, an intermediary between Han 3 and Han 6, offers space savings of up to 40% compared to the next larger size. HARTING thus offers sustainable solutions for environments where installation space is limited to a minimum. There is a particular demand for this in mechanical engineering and automation as well as in energy and transportation applications.

With the new size, users gain space for the rest of the required infrastructure, e.g., for cooling/ventilation. At the same time, the 70 A contacts of the Han-Eco enable energy savings of up to 50%, which also promotes sustainability. This is primarily due to the low impedance of the silver-plated 70 A power contacts compared to competing products (CEE plugs).
